1. Glassware
Glassware is vital to doing good science. If not handled with care, glassware can cause serious harm.
General rules to follow when handling glassware:
• Notify your teacher if you break glassware.
• Dispose of broken glass in the appropriate container.
• When inserting glass tubing into rubber stoppers, corks ortubing follow these guidelines:
- Use adequate hand protection
- Lubricate the tubing
- Hold hands close together to minimize movement if glass breaks
• Never use laboratory glassware to serve food or drinks.
• Guideline for disposing broken glass:
- Do not pick up the broken glass with bare unprotected hands
- Use a brush and dust pan to clean up broken glass
- Remove broken glass in sinks by using tongs for large pieces and cotton held by tongs for small pieces and slivers
- Place all the recovered broken glass into the broken glass container
1. Fire Safety
One of the major concerns in the science laboratory is the use of a Bunsen burner or alcohol lamp. Both involve the use of fire and flame. Remember that to use such equipment is a privilege. Make sure you use gloves if picking up a warm or hot object. Do not place body parts into a flame. Make sure you know where to turn off the gas. Long hair should be tied back and long sleeve should be rolled up.
2. Sharp Instrument Safety
Sharp instruments are needed in the lab. You must never use or pretend to use it on yourself or someone else.
3. Eye Safety
Often labs require that you wear safety glasses. The purpose of such glasses is to prevent damage to your vision. If something gets into your eyes, make sure you let your teacher know. The glasses shown here are for impact safety. Safety goggles that are vented should be used when working with chemicals. Alcohol wipes should be used to clean the goggles before using.
4. Electrical Safety
Many labs involve the use of electrical devices. When you plug in such electrical equipment, make sure you include the ground plug (round). Hold the plug firmly by the insulating cover when plugging it in or unplugging it. NEVER unplug an electrical device by pulling on its cord!
5. Chemical Safety
Often labs involve the use of chemicals. Please be careful to keep chemicals off your skin and out of your mouth and eyes. If you get any chemical on your skin or in your eyes, INFORM your teacher immediately.
6. Animal Safety
Occasionally you will encounter animals in the science lab. Please be careful to keep from being bitten. If an animal bites you while in the lab, INFORM your teacher immediately

General Laboratory Rules

 Conduct yourself in a responsible manner at all times in the laboratory.
 Be familiar with your lab assignment before you come to lab. Follow all written and verbal instructions carefully. If you do not understand directions or part of a procedure, ask the teacher before proceeding.
 Never work alone. No student may work in the laboratory without an instructor present.
 Perform only those experiments authorized by the instructor. Never do anything in the laboratory that is not called for in the laboratory procedures or by your instructor. Carefully follow all instructions, both written and oral. Unauthorized experiments are prohibited.
 Safety goggles and aprons must be worn whenever you work in lab. Gloves should be worn whenever you use chemicals that cause skin irritations or need to handle hot equipment. Wear older clothes that cover the maximum amount of skin.
 Know the locations and operating procedures of all safety equipment including the first aid kit, eyewash station, safety shower, spill kit, fire extinguisher, and fire blanket. Know where the fire alarm and the exits are located.
 At the end of the laboratory session see if:
a) Main gas outlet valve is shut off
b) The water is turned off
c) Desk top, floor area, and sink are clean
d) All equipment is cool, clean, and arranged.
